I am so sorry to find that no acknowledgment has been sent to your letter of the 4th April on the subject of the future of Hong Kong. It happens that the secretary of 3tate has been away since the beginning of April owing to illness, and it has not, therefore, yet been possible for him to see your letter.
I will see that your letter is placed before hia immediately upon his return, when a further reply will be sent to you on the subject.
